Fighting V8 Supercars Season Start for Wilson Security GRM
Volvo Polestar Racing started the 2015 V8 Supercars opening weekend at the Clipsal 500 fighting hard. Scott McLaughlin scored two strong qualifying positions with second and third on the grid, but the first two races saw the Kiwi having to fight mechanical issues and penalties.
”It has been an up and down day today. We had a really fast car, but it did not translate into the results we wanted. We are going to fight back tomorrow,” said McLaughlin.
The very first race ended on the warm up lap as the oil pump failed for McLaughlin. The second race saw McLaughlin starting second after a strong effort by the team to repair the car in the short period of time between the races.
The Kiwi claimed the lead into the first corner from reigning champion Jamie Whincup. But the stewards judged McLaughlin to have jumped the start and awarded him a 10 second penalty to take during his pitstop. The Kiwi pitted from a strong lead during a safety car session to take his penalty, a move that was not allowed according to the regulations, resulting in a further penalty of 10 seconds to be added after the race.
McLaughlin rejoined the track in ninth position after his stop and fought hard up through the field to get past Craig Lowndes to third position in the closing laps. The second penalty however meant that McLaughlin dropped from third to ninth position after the race.
”The car was really fast in the second race and I moved forward through the pack after my pitstop penalty. I got third place off Lowndes eventually and I had a great battle with him. The second penalty, well, it is one of those things. That is the rules, we got to take them and we will fight on tomorrow. The pace is there, no doubt,” said McLaughlin.
Team mate David Wall fought hard as well in the two opening races, climbing from 23rd to 17th in the first race and from 21st to 15th in the second race.
”We worked on trying to make the tyres lasting longer in the second race. The changes were very effective and it allowed me to climb the order with a better result,” said Wall.
One longer race of 250 kilometres remain of the Clipsal 500 weekend and starts at 15:25 tomorrow local time.
