MOFFAT TAKES SYDNEY HONOURS
James Moffat has continued his resurgence in the 2018 Porsche Carrera Cup Championship, taking victory in Round 5 at Sydney Motorsport Park on Saturday night.
A pair of second placings allowed the 34 year old to be crowned the weekend winner, as the Carrera Cup field played support act to the historic Supercars’ night race.
It was the perfect stage for Moffat to back up his Darwin race win at the last start, and step back on the top step of the podium before a monster Saturday night crowd.
“It was a great weekend for motorsport in this country and to do well and get the round win in front of such a massive crowd, just before the V8s raced was a very cool thing,” Moffat said.
“Coming off Darwin to continue our good form was very rewarding for everyone in the team.”
“I always knew we’d hit our straps and I’m hoping that continues now for the rest of this year’s championship.”
The successful weekend lifts Moffat from fifth to third in the Carrera Cup title fight, with three events remaining.
The Tickford Racing endurance driver showed great pace all weekend in Sydney – qualifying third before his two second placed finishes – behind Dylan O’Keefe in race one, and Jordan Love in race two. Jaxon Evans continues to lead the series.
“We had good speed all weekend, I feel like we’ve got right on top of the car now at Wall Racing which is a relief, and exciting with what’s to come,” Moffat said.
“Sydney Motorsport Park is a very tough place to pass, I just wish the races could have been a bit longer to give us a better chance to shoot for the win.”
The Carrera Cup series next heads to South Australia’s Tailem Bend for an historic sixth round at the end of August.
It will be the first time the series has raced at the brand new venue, where again they’ll be the main support act to the Supercars Championship.
“We’ve just had a great weekend for the sport with the night racing, and I think the Bend is going to be brilliant as well,” Moffat said.
“I hope we can keep the momentum going and finish the year off really strongly at the front of the field.
Round 5 of the Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia Championship begins at Tailem Bend on August 24.
