Tough Times in the Concrete Jungle

Wilson Security Racing GRM driver James Moffat had a frustrating weekend on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

Teamed with Richard Muscat for the third and final two-driver endurance race of the year, the duo recorded results of 18th and 19th from the twin 300km races, with race pace lacking in both encounters.

Following 22 races of season 2017, Moffat now sits 17th in the point standings.

The championship continues in New Zealand at Pukekohe Park Raceway on November 3-5 with the penultimate event of the year.

Friday

  • Fine running for the opening day of practice.
  • Moffat and team mate Muscat started the weekend by setting the ninth fastest time in the opening 30-minute long session.
  • Muscat was 24th in the second co-driver only practice.
  • Moffat took the wheel for the third and final practice, setting the 19th fastest time before coming into contact with the wall at turn 11.

“Today didn’t end up finishing so well for us,” said Moffat.

“I made a mistake at turn 11 in practice three and unfortunately crashed the car.

“I’m very disappointed with myself, and the car sustained a huge amount of damage.”

Saturday

  • A wet track greeted competitors, with Moffat returning to the circuit in a rebuilt number 34 Commodore.
  • The day’s 20-minute qualifying session netted Moffat 19th starting position for the opening 300km race.
  • Muscat started on a very wet track, and after initially running in 16th, he pitted on lap 35 from 25th position.
  • Moffat picked off positions throughout the remaining laps, and after making his second stop on lap 57, the team was classified 18thin the time certain race.

“The team put in a stellar effort to basically rebuild the whole front the car overnight, and I’m extremely grateful for their efforts in getting it back out there,” said Moffat.

“With the rain, we were thinking we might be quite strong in those conditions given our wet weather form from Bathurst, but a decision to go in a different setup direction for the conditions proved to be not the best choice, and we struggled for grip and consistency.”

Sunday

  • A return to fine conditions for the final day of action.
  • In the second and final qualifying session for the weekend, Moffat registered the 18thfastest time.
  • After dropping back to 24th at the start, Muscat moved his way through to 18th, before eventually pitting on lap 35 from 20th.
  • Stopping late on lap 70 saw Moffat run as high as fifth position.
  • Returning to the track in 19th, Moffat held station until the chequered flag, with the race running safety car free.

“I didn’t quite nail my lap in qualifying, and I felt we had the potential to be a bit further up the grid,” said Moffat.

“The race for us was pretty uneventful, we lost a bit of ground at the start, and without any safety cars it was hard for us to recover.

“Overall not the greatest of weekends, we struggled for some speed in the car.

“Hopefully we can finish the year off with some solid results over the remaining four races.”
